    @Maqui While civilian life lost during war is always unfortunate, it was unavoidable due to the nature of that war. Societies were militarized and cities were turned into enormous manufacturing floors and centers of infrastructure dedicated to sustaining the war effort. It was the truest expression of total war the human race had ever seen as entire nations, from six to ninety, waged war. As someone whom I presume is sympathetic to the Soviet Union, I am positive you must appreciate this fact given the sheer volume of human life lost from Berlin to the Vulga that did not wear a uniform. You are ignorant to the nature of war to deny this. Furthermore, Hiroshima and Nagasaki where military targets and selected due to their importance for the upcoming Operation Downfall.

    The primary importance of Hiroshima was the headquarters for the half a million man Second Army. The Second Army commanded all IJA personal on Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu south of Tokyo. It was in this area that Operation Cornet and Olympic would be launched. Destroying the IJA chain of command would have, in theory, bought vital time to establish beachheads before the inevitable counter-offensive. Of secondary importance was its strategic location in logistics. Hiroshima was the only transportation node that could facilitate the vast quantities of men and material the IJA would need to relocate to Kyushu in response to a landing. By destroying this network the ability for Honshu to support Kyushu would have been crippled.

    Nagasaki was the secondary target for the second bomb. The first, Kokura, was a major munitions depot – by far the largest outside of Tokyo. Destroying this would have further crippled the IJA on Kyushu to supply itself and it was projected by the Pentagon that its garrison would have run out of munitions and ordinance within one month. Poor visibility forced Boxcar to divert to Nagasaki. The secondary target and the historic location was the only functional naval harbor (of size) outside of Yokohama and home to the fleet protecting Kyushu Island. As I am sure you can imagine, a functional IJN response would be catastrophic to a landing and the Army Aircorpes could not eliminate it due to geography.

    @Sam, not all of them. Russia, to me, has always seemed to be a nation suffering from a split personality. On one hand you have half of the people as you describe; wholly unpleasant and vicious in their disposition to foreigners. On the other, you have the other half who are the most pleasant and kind people. They are extraordinarily curious about foreigners and go out of their way to treat them well.
