When mass air travel became cheap and popular, a rash of Hollywood movies about air disasters came out in the 70s. When the internet first became popular, a whole bunch of movies about hacking and cybersecurity came out. During the 2nd World War, movies about war were everywhere. At the dawn of the Space Age, movies about alien invaders were extremely common. And yes, during the Cold War, all kinds of media showing/discussing/singing about scenes of nuclear annihilation were all over the place.
This is not some sign that a new generation is bent on destroying itself. If anything, it’s humanity trying to make sense of/learn to exist in a world in which the sudden outbreak of nuclear war within seconds is now a realistic possibility once again.
And of course Duke Nuke’em Forever was finally released when Fukushima happened 😉
