  Well, it’s very clearly a ‘tribute’ to the Contra games, in particular Super Contra in Super Nintendo. If you play the EU version of that game, Super Probotector, you even get the mechanical main character. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this developer is a European.
  
  I’ve just played the game, and the first level has many elements that mirror the first stage of Super Contra, and the 3rd stage basically IS the 3rd stage of Super Contra.
  
  Honestly, it could almost be some long, lost Super Contra port to some exotic 16 bit system the world forgot all about, like the Jaguar hehehe
