Fort Solis is the worst video game I have ever played & completed in 20 years of gaming.
Fails as a game
I’m not just saying the thing above to grab your attention, I’m saying this because that’s how I honestly feel after completing nearly 900 titles in the span of nearly two decades, on many different platforms and from many different genres. Fort Solis is not necessarily the worst because it does so many things so badly (although it indeed does). It’s the worst because it’s the first ‘game’ I’ve played that does literally nothing to fulfill any of the criteria that make something a video game.
Games are about interactivity and player choice. It’s a choice to shoot a goomba in Mario instead of jumping on its head. It’s a choice to save the fish at the start of Detroit: Become Human. It’s a choice in Dark Souls to decide how you want to gear up before the next boss. Fort Solis doesn’t have ANY choices. In this… product, the interactivity consists of the following things: you either open doors, pick up items to be able to open doors, walk, partake in extremely bad quick-time events, or watch monitor screens. It’s not a game when all you have to do is hit (A) to trigger a cutscene. It’s the same as hitting Resume on your Blu-Ray player to continue your movie. Hell, even the bloody QTEs were unfailable, or at least that was my experience with them.
Fails as a movie
Fort Solis sacrificed everything for the sake of creating a cinematic experience. Yet the irony is, that it fails MISERABLY as a movie too. Why? Because first, its characters don’t grow or evolve throughout the whole ‘story’, and second, there is practically NO story! If you’ve seen the trailers, you’ve pretty much seen everything. Jack and Jessica receive a manual distress call from Fort Solis station so they go and check it out, and then NOTHING happens for 4 hours! They just randomly regurgitate the same boring points about a movie they’ve watched, and you run into some dead bodies, but you learn literally nothing aside from seeing some videos and emails on some PCs from the station employees who only talk about two things: soil experiments and Mars storms. And the ending, man, the ending, what an anticlimactic letdown.
Total fail
Fort Solis fails as a game, and it fails as a movie too. I don’t know what it is, all I know is that I wanted to get drunk so much after I finally finished it. You know, instead of hitting (A) repeatedly in the game to make the character drink beer, because, oh, well, that’s the most amount of interactivity it has. Oh, and it only takes 4 hours because 2 hours of that is just super-slow walking, otherwise, it would have only taken 2 hours. And yeah, there’s no run button! I guess the developers thought it would have been hard to animate the characters running up the stairs, and it would have made the game less ‘cinematic’.
Technical problems
This is really just a side note because absolutely no one should buy and play (?) this. I know it’s hard to believe, but the devs managed to make a game less optimized than Jedi Survivor. I have an RTX 3090 with an i5-13600KF, 32GB DDR5 6800MHz RAM and 6000/7000MB/s SSD. I can usually play highly demanding games at 90-120 FPS at 4K in DLSS Performance mode at High-Epic settings. This ‘game’ drops below 60 even with the lowest settings. In fact, there are barely any differences between the presets. It also crashed once, it has Unreal Engine micro stutters, the screen-space reflections are some of the worst I’ve ever seen (I can only see half of my character’s reflection from a distance) and the shadows bounce from one spot to another on every surface, as if the walls were made out of water or something like that. Also, where is the ultrawide support from this so-called cinematic game? Oh, and be prepared for a locked FOV with a character that literally blocks half of your screen.

i thought they had fixed the UE caching stutter wit UE5 but no,its still as present as ever.no ultrawide support neither.ive played it for an hour just now and ive literally pushed forward on the joypad and press A afew times to interact with things and done a couple of bizarre joystick/button combos to initiate movements and thats about it.i dont like to hate on peoples efforts but honestly ladies and gents dont even bother with this,its a waste of time.oh,and the character doesnt run.lierally walks everywhere and its not a fast walk neither.somebody give me the hour of my life back pleaseeeee

RUNE shouold have released Smurfs Kart insteed of this crap . Smurfs Kart got really good review and it is one of the best kart racing since mario kart . Dont understand how come no group released it .

Really enjoying this game and if you like Deliver us the moon / or mars games this is pretty close . Ubreal5 looks amazing!!! Pretty demanding just leave visual effects setting on medium and should be fine. I have An Asus X299 with Intel I7-7820X 8\16 Cpu 32gigs of ram games installed on one of the nvme raid arrays Rtx2060 oc to 13% 2060 super performance wise and runs pretty smooth 60fps for the most part and at 1080res needs at least 200+MB\s constant bandwidth to the install drive so if you have HDD and not a SSD u might want to cap game to 30fps to stop frame hitching frame texture bandwidth starvation due to the HDD seek and transfer latency
