Depends on the play style. Easy difficulty = Typical Amnesia game. Story is rather short. Enemy AI is ‘dumbed down’.

Highest difficulty = a completely different experience. It’s even better when using only the flashlight (ignore the power switches!). Gameplay is like Alien: Isolation or even Thief then, where you need to sneak from dark room to dark room to get all items and escape without getting traced by the enemy. This could take a while. Quiet intense atmoshere, the creature is well made and big! Decent AI with logical behavior (most of the time). No scripted jumpscare crap there, the enemy really hunts you down. It scared the Bejeezus out of me not only the first time it came out of a wall behind me. Close encounter means sudden death. I wish there would be a procedural generated map to make gameplay even more unopredictable.

Best Amnesia game so far. I’d say best Horror game so far too, but it’s definately not another walking simulator on hard difficulty.

This version works ok – keyboard error (door code bug) fixed! No further bugs detected, aside from one situation where the beast got stuck in broken barrels. Still some performance issues, but no dramatic FPS problems. Amnesia games always seem to be a bit laggy.

I expected a typical Amnesia game – a mediocre, even decent (SOMA) walking simulator. What I got was on a completely different level. My favorite game of the year so far!

SPOLER-ALERT (just strategy tips, nothing story-relevant):

If you want the real deal – play on hard, but don’t use the generator for the light. Use the fuel for burning the corpses instead, and get rid of those annoying rats that way. Don’t use your revolver as a weapon. Better use the revolver to set the fuel on fire instead (until you found the lighter), after you throw it over the corpses. Shooting at the monster is not worth the bullets, because you’ll distract that beast only for a few seconds at highest difficulty. Also don’t shoot at the beast if you can’t escape in a rather wide radius. The reach of that shithead is tremendous. You can kill rats by shooting at them (by throwing a gas grenade? I’m not sure). But they will respawn until you burned the dead bodies.

Since the game is physics-based (and weight is physics too…), you can try barricading the holes, where the creature preferably enters and leaves the corridor, with barrels – especially those holes near your safe room or where you walk around constantly. This will give you some life-saving seconds. But barricading will work only temporarily most of the time: The AI will crash wooden barrels, even the exploding ones (you can’t hurt that beast by explosives). The metal barrels are better for barricading, but they can be pushed away by the AI too – you need to jam them somewhere. I spent quiet some time just finding ways of barricading the beast’s entries into the map – I love such type of immersion. The devs could even make a challenge mode out of it (try blocking the beast for xxx minutes!)

Not just close the door, but LOCK the safe room door behind you when you are chased by the AI – it can OPEN unlocked metal doors, and it can destroy wooden doors, even when they have locks and are locked. It seems with your progession the beast gets more aggressive and stronger.

The story is ok, but irrelevant for me – I started the game because of the story, but played it for challenging the AI. Contrary to THE DARK DESCENT the enemy doesn’t just spawn in the area. You can see the beast leaving a corridor using the holes and crouching back into them after it searched for you. The monster can even CAMP in these holes and can draw you in, if you pass by too close and too loud (running!). If the AI sees you under a table, it destroys the table. If it sees you hiding in a cabinet, it opens the cabinet. I even saw it looking into a cabinet randomly while I crouched under a table. Every time you used explosives or destroyed a door with bricks – run or hide! Destroying doors will instantly alarm the AI. Don’t rely on traps – trigger them by throwing something on the wire (and run or hide then). You are the only one getting hurt by traps. And even triggered gas traps will alarm the beast instantly.

The AI sees you, hears you, and it even seems to smell you: for example it is more active near you when you walk around with a piece of flesh in your hand. Oh, and you surely know the trick of escaping an enemy by using an area transition – it will not work here, the AI can use those transitions too. I had a situation where the transition was on the steps to a cellar area. So I entered that next area (the game loads), but I still heard the beast behind me. I thought about a bug and wanted to go back on the upper floor. I turned around to left the cellar – an saw the beast coming down the stairs! Amazing!

I bought this game now, Frictional Games! Because of the amazing AI (best ‘Tactical Survival AI’ since ‘Alien Isolation’). I would love to have a Survival Mode for this game. No story, just trying to escape an area. If that area could be randomly generated WITHOUT weaken the AI’s impressive pathfinding, it would be awesome! Whoever made that AI (and hopefully optimizes it further) is a genius and deserves much more than just MY money for this game! Very very well done, ladies and gentlemen!
